2010 Ducci Designs Season: Where To Find Us!

This winter and spring have proven to be B-U-S-Y! I am not complaining! It's been crazy. A good crazy! And yes, I have had moments of overwhelming angst! A bit of internalyzing, "Can I do this? Of course I can do this!". A bit of venting to my supporters, "Can I do this? Of course I can do this!" (I'd like to take this moment to thank them for listening and reaasuring me that "I can do this!" THANK YOU!! xoxo)

So why all this craziness? Well, Ducci Designs got the amazing opportunity to be part of the Local Collection! A new boutique for emerging local designers. So the season was spent building up the inventory for their grande opening on May 1st! I also got a surge of custom orders for flowered shirts, message headbands, baby gear, bridal headpieces, bridesmaids hair accessories and flat flower clips!

Some night you're on the town in Boston check out the Local Collection at Faneuil Hall Market Place in the South Market Building (diagonally across from Cheers, next to Godiva, and a few doors down from Ann Taylor, Victoria Secrets and Urban Outfitters. Yes, we're in great company! The store hours are Monday - Saturday 10-9 and Sunday 12-7.

I should also add that the Local Collection will be featured on Chronicle tonight, Wednesday, June 16th!

Now phase 2.... Gearing up for the 2010 SoWa Market season. I decided only to do 5 markets this season so I can focus on inventory for LC. BUT it was very important to me to keep up the markets as I get to keep in touch with the clients and the people that are interested in DD! I love interacting and chatting with everyone and it was important for me not to lose that. So now I am busy getting inventory ready for my first date, plus new items and displays! The dates we'll be at SoWa are Sundays 10-4: June 27, July 18, August 15, September 12 & October 17.

The Precision & Whimsy of Flat Flowers

What goes into the making of Ducci Designs Flat Flower hair accessories & brooches?

Step 1: Finding the right color & textured vinyl. Not an easy task sometimes to find! I like to use recycled vinyls (and sometimes leather and suede) as much as possible. In fact the very first FF ever made was recycled from a silver platinum bag I had, that had seen better days, I used it so much!! But I saved it and tried something new when I had some free time and on a particular day when the creative juices were flowing..... And one year later, we now have a whole line of different types of Flat Flower accessories!

Step 2: Prepping to cut the flowers. Tools needed: Very sharp, fine point scissors (to get through the thick vinyl), scissor sharpeners (the thick material dulls the scissors fast!), a fabric pen (for drawing design), patience and good lighting!

Step 3: Cutting the flowers. I draw the pattern I want for the smallest layer on the reverse side of vinyl. I then cut out the general shape. Then, the painstaking task of perfecting it to the exact shape I want; no sharp or uneven edges! I repeat this process for each layer of the flower, each one getting a bit bigger (depending on the design it could be 3 - 5 layers). And also this is done for the felt backing.

Step 4: Sewing it together. Tools needed: sewing needle (a strong one), thread (color is important), beads (depending on the design I choose the right beading (color, shape and size). At this point I also have to decide what it's going to be: a headband (elastic or hard), a brooch and/or hair clip. Now, I won't get into the boring technicals of the actual sewing process... You just need to know that I thread the needle and hand stitch every layer and ever bead! Yes, there are nights my fingers hurt! And I should add, the technicals of sewing aren't boring to me!

Step 5: Putting it all together: Depending on what the final piece will be, depends on this... But again I won't get into the boring technical steps... But just know, I sew and glue it all together and then voila`! the DD label is in place and it's ready for the showroom floor!

What I have learned: Precision is needed to make these, no doubt. But more importantly, you have to let go and have whimsy too! A balance, if you will. I was (and still am sometimes) so crazy to get every edge perfect. But now through making so many, and having my supporters (the ones who see the process of it all) tell me that they don't see "that jagged edge" that is glaring at me.... I have learned that perfection isn't always the best, that jagged edge just adds a little homemade character! So now I have more fun with it. I have whimsy! And I am finding the best pieces come from that and then the precision needed to execute! Good lesson for life too I think!

My dear old dancing and modeling friend asked me to whip up a headpiece for one of her students dancing in a competition this weekend!

I was happy to!

This is the info I had to work with...
"The song she is doing is called "Bring on the Men" from Jekyll and Hyde. Her costume is black lace over turquoise. It's a mock turtleneck leotard with half skirt. Kind of a cancan feel to it. I would need it to be on a clip so it's secure. Her light brown hair will be in a side bun, so the headpiece will probably be worn on the side. Also a little bit of depth not to full. One request is the feathers. I know that's your signature thing."

So this is what I created! Hope it brings her a gold!
A fan of turquoise feathers, with a black feather in the center and 3 twisted wired rhinestones. Black beading, recycled from a vintage dress....

Style Me Pretty

Check out this fantastic web article & video on Style Me Pretty.... Ducci Designs provided the headpieces for this mock wedding that took place at The Loft in South Boston. It was a very interesting day with all the vendors that would be used at a "real" wedding! Much slower pace and probably more relaxed than being at a real wedding. It was a great experience to see all that goes into creating a photo/video shoot for this website!

Within one hour of hearing my dear friends had a baby girl, I got inspired to create some baby gear! I immediately started sewing pink flowers, not even knowing what they were going to adorn... After a successful summer of creating and selling adults flowered tanks and Ts, I knew I'd come up with something.... So after doing a little shopping and buying some Carter's onesies and then seeing the adorable little hats and socks... I knew I had a great grouping for a Baby Gear Ensemble! And here it is: a 3-piece set for your little angel; matching flowered onesie, hat and socks.
From making my first baby outfit, thanks to being inspired by Mia's birth, several more have been made... Red flowers and turquoise flowers have been the most popular.

Ducci Designs Angels - SoWa Market - End of a Season

Yesterday was the final SoWa Market for the season! And I am happy to report that we went out with a bang! It was a beautiful day. The vibe was hoppin'. The crowds were out....And so were the zombies!

Halloween costumes were required by the vendors. Zombie/bloody style costumes actually. At first I was concerned, how could I get everything done on time, find a costume that was functional, warm and creative? How could I sell to people dressed in costume (without a cocktail in my hand)?
But really? How could I sell feathers with my guts hanging out and fake blood all over my face? So.... we forewent the blood and guts and dressed Ducci Style!
And thankfully our sweet & creative costumes were received with compliments! Welcome the Ducci Designs Angels!

What you can do with the hem of a dress!

Calling all LADIES & BRIDESMAIDS.... Add an elegant accessory that you know will be a perfect match to your ensemble....

When you get your special occasion (bridesmaid) dress hemmed, ask the seamstress to save the extra fabric. Why? You ask? Because the possibilities are endless. That extra fabric can be made into accessories that will not only compliment your outfit but also make you elegantly stand out in a crowd. Ladies, that extra hem isn't just for wrapping around the stems of your flower bouquets anymore! Think outside the box...

The possibilities:
A flowered brooch could be worn on your dress; over the heart, on a sash at your waist or even on your clutch(see photo). Adorn those shoes! Shoes clip are always a very chic option!
A sophisticated headpiece or simpler hair accessories are obviously MY favorite option! Depending on how much fabric there is to work with, a large flower can be made and worn in your hair (see photo). If we don't have a lot of fabric to work with then smaller pieces can be made, wear 1, wear 4, (see photo) scattered about your beautiful do!

Lets be real, how many bridesmaids dresses have you ever re-worn? Maybe one, if you're lucky. So with creating an accessory, you can wear it on the special occasion with the original garment and also wear it again with a simple outfit or with another party dress! Something is being created with what would have been thrown in the trash (reuse and recycle!). You'll also have something you may actually wear again!! Even call it a special memento of the day, if you will! ...Because I highly doubt you're throwing on your BM dress again and prancing around the house!

Bridal Headpiece Creation

I am just coming down from a wonderful high.... The high of one of my dearest friend's wedding.... Not only was it such an honor to be a part of her wedding as a bridesmaid but also, as a designer, to create her headpiece!

Laura's dress was gorgeous (of course!). An elegant gown with a layer of ivory chiffon flowing over the top of the A-line skirt, ruched strapless bodes with a taupe sash and two petaled flowers sitting to the left side on the waist. She had told me she wanted something simple in her hair, maybe some sort of flower with feathers.... Feathers, of course I will use feathers! We had looked at some photos and headpieces in stores, so I had a gauge of what she liked and had in mind. I had her tell the seamstress to save the fabric from the hem of her dress. I knew I would use this to create the headpiece. (As it turned out, I was able to find an almost exact match of chiffon and I ended up using that. But if I had only the hem I would have used it... Having the extra fabric gave me insurance and peace of mind!) I had a detailed photo of the flowers on her dress and used this as my inspiration.

I began cutting and cutting petal after petal... The flower had five groupings of petals, then had four tiered layers.... All total there was 135 petals! It was then embellished with a few pearls and a vintage rhinestone flower, which ended up being her "something old" and even more special as it came from our friend's (and also a bridesmaid) grandmother's old jewelry collection! I hand-dyed white feathers in coffee to get a perfect ivory match. I wasn't sure if feathers would end up working.... I played with it and was able to incorporate them....

As with any client, but especially your friend, you want them to be happy with what you create. I had explicitly told Laura I wanted her to honest with me and tell me what she liked and didn't like when I brought her round-one of the piece..... As it turned out she didn't love how I had done the feathers. The were grouped together in one section coming out from behind the flower. Once we put it in her hair, it didn't lay right... The flower was also a bit flat and not as whimsical as she had hoped.... As I had planned accordingly to have enough time to make any changes, I was not concerned about getting the job done so she was completely happy with it... My roommate Stacy (another bridesmaid and my sounding board for design ideas!) and I bounced ideas off of each other of how I could change it up.... So I worked on creating fuller petals to fill in the gaps and give it some depth. The feathers were removed from their "clump", cut down and then individually placed in between layers of petals scattered throughout the piece.
When I brought it back for Laura to try, her face lit up. When we put it in her hair, she beamed. It was now perfect for her and if I do say so myself... It looked much better in her hair than version one!!! I could breath a sigh of relief. She loved it!

Laura made the most beautiful bride from head-to-toe! Congratulations to Laura & Imran!

A Hot Item

You only know what's going to sell once you get it out to the public!

This is what happened with the Flowered Tanks & Ts.... I made the first 2 for an upcoming market a couple months ago and both sold that day. I knew I liked them but I had no idea they'd get the response they did! They were a hot item! Awesome! So for the next market I made 4 more, 3 sold! But what I learned is that people loved the simple, classic black & white... So for SoWa Market this weekend I have made several more, including a few black & whites! I have also made some for little girls... They are adorable in pastel shades (and they also coordinate with the hair accessories I have started to make for the little ones too)!!

Prep-Prep-Prepping for SoWa Market

After having a few South End Open Markets (SoWa Markets) under my belt now, I am confident with the flow of events for the day. At the same time, I have to always be thinking ahead and preparing for the unknown! It's a lot to think about; everything you need to do, have and be. It's physically a lot of work, mentally challenging but also rewarding and euphoric!

General list of items "To Bring":

Display: Tent, weights (40lbs per leg), tables, displays, booth accessories and of course, all the inventory!
Having a second pair of hands: My WONDERFUL "helper" who knows the drill now just like me!
Having what you need, besides #1: Pens, Sharpie, biz cards, cc machine, tax ID number, paper, scissors, tape, stapler, pushpins... Think ahead, you never know what you might need! And often times you can become a hero if your neighbor needs something they don't have but you do!
Smile: At everyone who walks by, interested in your work, or not, SMILE. Make eye contact and fully engage those who show interest. Tell them something about your work, your style, the thought behind the creation... I find people really like learning about the artist and "behind the scenes" of creations. But only if you SMILE!

Getting Help In Your Weaker Areas

I wanted to share this email with you that I have just sent out to a handful of colleges/universities; more specifically to marketing departments. I had the thought... I know what I am good at in this business - the creative stuff, but I am in desperate need of help in my weak area, which is the business/marketing side... So as you will see, I came up with an idea to get help in my weaker area... Lets see if we get any takers... I hope so because I do think it's a win-win situation for all parties!!

Hello, my name is Dina Canducci. As you begin to plan upcoming classes, projects and assignments, I would like to propose an idea I have for your students curriculum...

I am from Boston, proud UMass Amherst alumni, Class of 1999 and I am trying to start a business. As the designer & creator of women's accessories (specializing in one-of-a-kind headpieces), I am trying to get Ducci Designs off the ground.... I am a very creative person but my business side is lacking. On the creative side, besides making all of my inventory, I also have done my own photography, created my own postcards, etc. I have a website and also use Etsy.com to try to promote and sell my products. I participate in shows & markets (i.e. SoWa Market, Design Hive, South End Open Studios) and have started to see, slightly, that my designs are getting noticed. My feathered & flowered headpieces are on consignment at Laura Preshong Gallery in the South End and also at Vineyard Jewelry in Oak Bluffs Martha's Vineyard. However, I don't know what my next steps should be to really get going. I have consulted with a PR Specialist (pro-bono), who gave me some wonderful ideas and I am putting some in motion. But I know there is a whole market out there for me if I can just get the right audience!

So my thoughts are that Ducci Designs could be a great project for your students... Teaching them how to launch a start-up, one-man-show. The tools (internet especially) are out there for me and my type of company and I am sure your students would benefit from researching these tools, putting them to work and seeing the results.

Martha's Vineyard Store Carrying Ducci Designs

On Memorial Day Weekend, my best friend and I had an adventure on Martha's Vineyard! We went for the day, took the early morning ferry, rented a car, stocked with a variety of my headpieces in a small suitcase, and with boutique listings in hand, we hit the pavement!!

My best friend and I have known each other since we were 3 years old... We have a special bond that makes us an amazing team. We have different personalities, which compliments our inexperienced selling tactics! We didn't really go into the boutiques and try to sell with any plan in mind, but somehow we both knew just what to say! Our energy and enthusiasm was something most, not all, but most boutique owners and sales associates couldn't resist!

The day started with giggles and going to the wrong ferry-line in Hyannis, while a road race was going on and streets were closed! Of course this all happened, this is so typical of what she and I go through.... It's like being Bridget Jones, something always goes wrong! But we just laughed and called it a "Bridget Jones moment!" We made it to the ferry, sat in the least windy seats on the outside deck and listened to some happy travelling 20-something tourists sing songs as we flew across the ocean. We got off the boat to make our way to get our rental car.

And then it happened........... The amazing energy of the day continued and only got better!

Within 5 minutes of getting off the ferry we stop in a hat store (just because Keri loves hats, not because we were trying to sell) and within 10 minutes, Keri is showing the owner my pieces and he is telling us to go a few doors over to a store, Vineyard Jewelry, they might be interested! (They wouldn't have fit in in his store with straw hats and visors.)

So off we go to Vineyard Jewelry and I speak with the owner who wasn't all that interested. She couldn't see her clientele wearing feathers... (That's fine, you have to fit in the appropriate feel and style of the store and the store owner knows best.) But then her assistant walks in (a pretty girl, maybe 24) and she gasps when she sees my mini-suitcase filled with feathers and flowers! YES! Thank God for this girl! She immediately asks to try on a red flowered headband and NOW the owner is taking notice!

So long story short, within 20 minutes of stepping off the ferry, I had my first consignment offer!!! They wanted the flowers not the feathers ... No problem! Just goes to show - it was a good job I brought a variety! Different audiences, different styles!

Although consignment isn't the ideal, as you aren't getting paid until they sell, it is still exposure! And especially with this economy you have to be willing to do that. I am!!! They aren't going to get noticed or sell sitting in bins in my spare room/"studio"!

We walked out of there to get the rental care and were so pumped about how the day began! We drove along the ocean, took in the beautiful scenery. We just kept laughing and saying to each other, "within 20 minutes we had a hit!" It was a pure adrenaline high! The feeling was awesome!

We hit about 12 boutiques, focusing mostly in Edgartown (seemed to be the best target audience). And then we went to a boutique, 21 Main. (21 Main Street, Edgartown) And a lovely sales associate Filomena LOVED my feathered headpieces! The owner was away but she thought she'd be interested... Of course I gave her my card and postcards showing a variety of pieces but then... Filomena asked if she could buy one! This way she'd have one for herself but also to show the store owner in person! YES!! Score!

We also had several people that turned their noses up at them... But that's ok, we were ecstatic for the positive feedback and kept focusing on that!

The best story and what ended our day on a high was at a store in Vineyard Haven, which was NOT the appropriate place for Ducci Designs at all - yet somehow Keri and I end up showing a very uninterested store owner the suitcase...(Every eye that sees them is good, so why not whip them out!!) She say she has no time to see them, so as I am shutting the case she says "but I love your belt, do you make those?" I respond, "Why yes I do!" (a fabric belt in vibrant colors and the only one I made!) She asks if I have more, I say "at home but I have this one"... She asks what I charge and then asks if she can write me a check! No kidding!!

Keri and I walked out of there and laughed and laughed in disbelief and shock at what just happened! We decided our work was done for the day and what a successful, fun day it was!

We dropped the rental off, walked to an outdoor bar near the ferry and got ourselves a cocktail! There were several cheers to be had for the dynamic duo of Ducci Designs that day!

Private Party at Spoil'd Update

The private party last week at Spoil'd was a decent event. Small crowd of suburban moms... So some of my pieces were a bit "out there" for them but I did sell a piece, chatted with a lady who's sister is a bride and interested in something different for her headpiece and handed out business cards. At this stage of the game, you have to be happy with this type of exposure... It's more people seeing my stuff! The store owner, Danielle was wonderful and open to having me back for other private parties where she knows the crowd better and maybe more interested in what I make.

Every bit of exposure at this point, is good exposure!

Private Trunk Show At Spoil'd

Hey everyone,

Just to give you a little background on why I want to do this blog... I am hoping it will be an outlet for me to express myself here.... The challenges and the ups and downs of starting a business. It is NOT an easy road, there are what I like to call, "two steps forward, one step back moments" happening all the time! I want to share my journey with you.... I have had major leaps in the last few months... I will try to compile all those in the next week or so then update pretty regularly as things happen.

I started creating women's accessories years ago, back when I was in modeling and dance competitions. My mom taught me how to sew! About a year ago I decided to really go for it and try to start my own biz.... It's only been a year (a short amount of time in the grand scheme, I have to keep reminding myself) and just now am I starting to see that my name and pieces are getting noticed and remembered! It's a great feeling!

What I have learned is that you MUST have passion for what you're doing, because if you didn't, you couldn't have the strength to grind away at everything!

I do it all: I create EVERYTHING. I design and hand make each and every piece myself. Whether it is a feathered headband, beaded scarf, embellished gloves or flowered headpieces. I also do much of my own photography (thanks to my friends who have let me borrow their equipment to my girlfriends who modeled for me!) I have had WONDERFUL support from everyone around me.... I could go on and on about that, and I will at another time! I also create all my own print materials such as the postcards I hand out at shows and interested ladies. I hit the stores to see if they'd like to sell my pieces. Some are interested and some not so much... You can't get offended if they don't like your stuff.... People either love it or hate it - it's not for everyone. I just have to remind myself of that and keep a thick skin when rejection hits. Which it does - but when you get someone who loves something you've made - it makes it all worth while!!

SoWa Open Market

On May 31st & June 7th we participated in the SoWa Open Market in the South End, Boston. What a fun time, GREAT energy and we lucked out with the weather! Both shows were a success, with many interested customers and future brides to create their very own one-of-a-kind headpieces for their wedding day! Many of my newest creations were a hit too! Such as the flowered headband, the textured "flat flower" clips and headbands, as well as our flowered tanks and Ts! We are always creating new things - you never know what will come out of my brain next!

The Cellebration of Fashion - The Red Collection Fashion Show

On May 15th we had a successful fashion show where the theme was RED. This event was a silent auction raising money for sickle cell disease. We featured two headpieces and one brooch. Embellished with feathers, vintage beading, hand-dyed tulle & silk flowers. It was a great show for an important cause.
